In my time involved; I’ve never kept a big team of stock birds. At the peak of success i kept 20 stock

Cocks & around 35 Stock Hens. The Key Cock birds were rotated regularly with selected Hens. Hence,

some Cock birds feature prominently. Key racers/producers feature a few times in any 5 Gen pedigree.

Many Hens have been used sparingly, simply because there wasn’t enough Cocks to pair them to. Stock

birds had separate lofts year round. Some Hens missed a season if/when they paired with another Hen.

Instead, those Two Hens were used as sitters/feeders when i split pairs to re-mate any specific Cock.

With the decision made to exit the sport, i set about breeding enough to make 3 sales viable. Started

breeding when 2008 rings came out in May 2008 & finished late Feb 2009. I double rung around 70

towards end from select pairs. This was to make them easier to find when catching them for each of 3

sales. However, Two rings made it difficult to sort them all when drafting catalogues. The older ring is

easily snipped off if not required. Also you will notice most old birds have an (extra) aluminium ring. These

are easily removed. They were put on when their racing merit earned them a place in the Stock loft. Any

bird with One white flight+ is called a Pied. All youngsters were sexed via toe/foot method when weaned.

As mentioned ARPJ article, no 2008 rung birds have been homed in or flown. They’ve been trained to eat

& drink in crate via weaning process. They may feel a bit heavy come sale time due not having flown.

They may be flighty in sale pens simply because they haven’t been handled (or seen people) except
